It is always a good time for a cocktail, whether you’re winding down after work, taking in the sunset on a rooftop bar or enjoying a chic cocktail experience with friends over the weekend. If you want to learn to make great cocktails yourself, keep reading!

6 Classic Cocktails to Perfect

There are tons of classic cocktails available, from the margarita to the cosmopolitan. Some of them consist of a few simple ingredients, while others are slightly more advanced. Let’s unpack a few of the popular options by looking at their ingredients and how to serve them.

1. Margarita

The definitive origins of the margarita are unknown, and it’s possible that the cocktail appeared in several different places at the same time. These drinks are known for sweet, sour and salty flavors that leave a tingling sensation on your taste buds. While there are many variations, a classic margarita is a strong cocktail that consists of tequila, orange liqueur and fresh lime juice. If you enjoy margaritas with a slight smoky taste, you can opt to replace the tequila with mezcal.

A classic margarita is a quick and easy drink to prepare for small or large groups and can be served on the rocks or frozen in a salt-rimmed glass.

2. Moscow Mule

On first instinct, “Moscow mule” rings bells of Russia. However, this drink was invented in New York or Los Angeles — depending on who you ask. The idea was to combine the unique properties of ginger beer and vodka in a solid copper cup. The cup is actually a unique ingredient itself, as it keeps the cocktail cold and refreshing while enhancing its flavors and aromas.

Moscow mules are vodka-based with added ginger beer and lime juice and are served cold over ice. You can use any unflavored vodka and garnish the drink with a lime wedge and a few mint leaves to add some color.

3. Mojito

The mojito is one of the world’s most iconic cocktails — good quality rum and fresh ingredients help balance citrus, sweetness and herbal notes, making it a very popular summer drink on most menus. As with many other cocktails, the origin of the mojito is uncertain, but it can likely be traced back to the bars of Cuba.

Mojitos typically consist of rum, soda water, sugar, lime and mint. You can serve this classic Cuban cocktail over ice and crush the mint leaves slightly to release some flavor without making the cocktail bitter.

4. Rum Runner

The rum runner is a potent tropical concoction and was likely created in the 1970s by a bartender in the Florida Keys who was on a mission to use up ingredients before new stock arrived. This drink is fruity and flavourful and is usually a combination of light and dark rum, banana liqueur, blackberry liqueur, pineapple juice, lime and a splash of grenadine. The rum runner is well-known for its exotic island-inspired taste. It has a sweet and smooth finish and is typically served over ice and garnished with a cherry or orange slice.

5. Old-Fashioned

The old-fashioned cocktail dates back to the 1700s and is one of the oldest classics. Originally, it was simply called the whiskey cocktail. Today, the drink is typically a mixture of bourbon or rye whiskey, sugar, bitters, water and sometimes a zest of citrus peel. The old-fashioned cocktail is smooth and balances sweetness with bitterness. It is often served in a short, sturdy glass, stirred with ice, and garnished with cherries or orange peel.

6. Cosmopolitan

The cosmopolitan — often referred to as the cosmo — dates back to the 1980s. It became an iconic symbol of New York City due to its association with the TV series “Sex and The City.” This drink is typically made with vodka, Cointreau or triple sec, cranberry juice, and lime juice. It is shaken with ice and served in a chilled martini glass, garnished with some lemon zest. The cocktail provides a mix of sweet and citrusy flavors with a bright pink color. It has some bold flavors, so do not let the chic look and pink color fool you!

General Best Practices on How to Make Great Cocktails

The next time you are hosting a special event or cocktail evening, you may want to treat your guests to a few delicious and enticing concoctions. Making cocktails at home can be easy if you let the following general practices guide you:

  • Base spirit: The quality of the spirit you choose plays a role in your overall success. A high-quality base spirit will help unlock the different flavors and aromas you want to achieve. Whiskey and tequila are popular choices for bold flavors, while more refreshing flavors can be achieved with gin or vodka.
  • Ingredients: Consider mixtures and garnishes, and choose ingredients that complement your base spirit. Vodka and gin usually pair well with refreshing, citrus-based ingredients, while whiskey and tequila are often paired with ginger beer, soda water or lime. Garnish is the final cherry on top — excuse the pun! You can experiment with different fruits, herbs and spices to add flavor and make your drink visually enticing.
  • Ratio: The golden rule of thumb is to follow a ratio of 2:1:1. This means you mix two parts of your spirit of choice with one part of something sweet and one part of something sour. An example would be to make a margarita with two parts tequila, one part sugar and one part lime.
  • Ice: Ice is often used to chill a beverage. However, as ice melts, it dilutes your drink and may affect its flavor. Citrus-based cocktails are often best served chilled, while smoky and bold drinks need less dilution and little or no ice at all.
  • Cocktail glass: Choosing the right cocktail glass is paramount to making great cocktails. Glasses help obtain and maintain the right temperature and can also affect the flavor and aroma of your drink. Popular cocktail glasses include martini glasses, copper mugs, rocks glasses, highball glasses and hurricane glasses.

Classic vs. Craft Cocktails

Classic cocktails are well-known, traditional and popular drinks that have withstood the test of time, such as the martini, mojito and cosmopolitan. So, what is a craft cocktail? These drinks are all about experimenting with creativity, unique ingredients and newfound techniques to develop innovative cocktail recipes. Craft cocktails provide a unique experience because they focus on artistry and personalization. Crafting these cocktails demands precision, creativity and a well-rounded understanding of flavors.

In summary, classic cocktails are traditional and based on a reliable foundation, while craft cocktails experiment with new ideas within mixology. LALA has truly mastered the art of craft cocktails, making it a must-visit destination for cocktail lovers.

A date night is the perfect opportunity to spark a new relationship or spice up a long-standing one. The key is choosing the right activity from all the fun date night ideas that may spring to mind. For a fun-filled, romantic evening to remember, take your special somebody out to a classy karaoke venue.

7 Reasons to Make Your Next Date a Karaoke Date

Maybe you’re new to karaoke or unsure whether it’s the ideal activity for your next date. Here are seven reasons to start warming up your vocal cords for a karaoke date night:

  1. Breaking the ice: If this is a first or early date and you’re still getting comfortable around each other, karaoke is a surefire way to break the ice. It conveys confidence, establishes trust and gets natural conversations flowing.
  2. Setting a mood: Choosing karaoke tracks can help set the mood you’re aiming for. Depending on your relationship, personalities and intentions, your song picks could be playful, romantic or sultry. If your partner chooses songs with a similar tone to yours, it’s a good indication you’re both on the same page.
  3. Discovering personalities: The way someone sings karaoke reveals a lot more than their singing chops. After a song or two, you’ll soon discover whether they’re shy, daring, funny or romantic.
  4. Going solo or duo: Karaoke dates allow you to each sing your own solos or share a duet. This gives you each the opportunity to open up before harmonizing over a song you both love.
  5. Kindling conversations: Karaoke nights invite conversations about one of everyone’s favorite topics — music. Use the songs as conversation prompts to ask about favorite artists, music trivia and the memories songs bring to mind. If there’s ever an awkward silence, launching into another song is a natural way to fill it. Karaoke sessions create space for meaningful connection without creating too much conversational pressure if you’re still testing the chemistry.
  6. Impressing your date: Sing a hit song with confidence, and you’re bound to impress your date. If you’ve got top-notch vocal skills, you can blow your date away with those powerful pipes. If you’re not quite pitch-perfect, your willingness to playfully put yourself out there is sure to strike a chord. It’s all in the delivery!
  7. Creating shared memories: People may forget movie nights and coffee dates, but the memories of your karaoke night will sparkle every time you hear those songs. It’s a great way to bond over a shared experience while making your date stand out from generic options.

10 Best Couples’ Karaoke Night Duets

If you’re open to a duet or your date suggests one, you want to be prepared with some killer karaoke anthems. Add these hits to your playlist as you look forward to the big night:

  1. “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart:” This iconic call-and-response duet by Elton John and Kiki Dee includes traded lines and classic harmonies. It’s playful enough to spark romance without coming on too strong.
  2. “You’re the One That I Want:” If you’re ready to get flirty in a light-hearted way, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John’s playful duet from “Grease” is a perfect pick. A little cheeky eye contact and some smile-worthy dance moves are essential to any karaoke take on this song.
  3. “Start of Something New:” Anyone who’s watched “High School Musical” will come alive as you belt out this nostalgic duet by Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.
  4. “Cheek To Cheek:” Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong’s swinging serenade is equal parts wholesome and intimate. This duet creates a sweet, sentimental mood while displaying contrasting but complementary voices. If comedy’s your thing, keep a soulful, gravelly Louis Armstrong impersonation in your back pocket as a surprise.
  5. “Islands in the Stream:” Kenny Rogers’s and Dolly Parton’s country-pop masterpiece showcases timeless harmonies over tender lyrics. If you and your date feel comfortable singing this one side-by-side, chances are you have a special connection.
  6. “Rewrite The Stars:” This is another epic Zac Efron duet, this time with Zendaya. “The Greatest Showman” launched this heart-stirring hit, but your own tandem rendition of the tune will be a performance for your date to remember. Warm up your voice to make the most of your range for this one.
  7. “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life:” “Dirty Dancing” made this feel-good anthem by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes famous. You and your date will have a blast with the infectious melodies and delightful harmonies.
  8. “Shallow:” This stirring power ballad by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper from the hit movie “A Star Is Born” gives both singers a chance to show off their range.
  9. “Love the Way You Lie:” This engaging hit by Eminem and Rihanna combines intense emotions, contrasting perspectives and distinctive vocal styles. Eminem’s rap lines give someone less confident with melodies another way to show off dazzling mic skills.
  10. “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough:” Endearing lyrics, one of music’s most famous choruses, and the combination of solo melodies and harmony sections make Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s duet a karaoke favorite. Bring plenty of energy and confidence to this one.

How to Choose a Karaoke Date Night Venue

Before you ask that special someone out for a karaoke date, find the ideal spot to suggest. Here are four factors to consider when choosing your karaoke venue:

  • Location: Narrow your search to places close enough to be convenient for both you and your date.
  • Atmosphere: The venue’s ambience will make a memorable impression. Look for a classy but comfortable atmosphere so that you both can unwind.
  • Food and drinks: Food and drinks will complete your date night experience. Pick a place with a full bar and a tantalizing menu.
  • Privacy: Instead of singing in a crowded bar full of strangers, make a reservation at a venue with private karaoke boxes. These rooms offer a more intimate setting for you and your date to get to know each other without the extra eyeballs on you. Private karaoke boxes are perfect for your first karaoke date, though they’re popular with new and seasoned singers alike.

Many people enjoy a glass of wine with a meal on a night out. Sometimes, you may stumble on a combination that makes your dinner and wine taste even better than it usually does. There’s a science to this, and it’s something you can use to elevate your dining experience every time. With the right selection, wine can enhance a dish by bringing out hidden accents and amplifying the best flavors. However, finding a winning combination requires a deeper understanding of the flavors and feelings at play.

Whether you’re looking to impress a guest or thoroughly enjoy your meal, learning how to match wine with food is a great skill to have. This food and wine pairing guide will take you through the characteristics you should consider when choosing a wine and the various pairing methods. It also includes specific pairing examples to explore wine pairing further and spark your imagination. After all, wine pairing is all about experimentation and finding what you love most.

Understanding Wine Characteristics

It’s a good idea to have a firm grasp of wine basics before you explore food and wine pairing. Wines vary in flavor and weight, and even the slightest differences can influence your dining experience.

Wine Flavor Profiles

The primary goal of pairing food with wine is to balance their tastes. Wine and food have distinct flavor profiles, and understanding these can help you find the perfect combination. The three main wine flavor profiles are:

  • Acidic: Wines have varying acidity levels depending on the type of grape and the climate in which they’re grown. Highly acidic wines are crisp and tart and create a mouthwatering effect in your mouth. White, rose and sparkling wines are usually the most acidic. They offer a refreshing sensation that pairs well with rich, fatty dishes.
  • Bitter: Tannin is a chemical compound responsible for red wine’s bitterness and dryness. Red wine varieties like cabernet sauvignon, syrah and nebbiolo are high in tannins. These wines are the perfect pairing for fatty dishes and protein-rich meals, as the tannin helps to break down the fats and proteins and boost the food’s flavor.
  • Sweet: Some wines have a higher residual sugar level, giving them a sweeter flavor profile. Sweet or dessert wines are the most sweet and work well with sweeter food. However, you can also pair some sweet white wines — like riesling and pinot gris — with spicier foods.

Wine Body

Wine body refers to how rich or heavy a wine feels, ranging from light to full. Sugar and alcohol levels are the main determinants of the body of wine, which you can check on the bottle’s label. A good rule of thumb for wine pairings is to match the weight of the wine and food:

  • Light: Light-bodied wines feel more delicate and refreshing, making them great for light-intensity meals like salads or fish. They have less tannin, are usually more acidic and have alcohol levels under 12.5%. Examples of light-bodied wines include pinot noir, gamay, riesling and sauvignon blanc.
  • Medium: A medium-bodied wine is more balanced and has an alcohol level between 12.5% and 13.5%. You might choose a medium-bodied wine like merlot, sangiovese or pinot gris when eating slightly richer food like pasta or roast chicken.
  • Full: Most red wines are considered full-bodied as they have more than 13.5% alcohol, increased tannin and less acidity. They feel rich and heavy and are an excellent choice for red meat and fattier dishes. Full-body red wine varieties include malbec, syrah and cabernet sauvignon, but a white wine like chardonnay can also be considered full-body.

Wine Pairing Methods

Now that you know the main characteristics of wine, you can start trying different pairing methods. Most wine lovers choose to either create a congruent or complementary wine pairing, depending on the food and their preferences.

Congruent pairings involve matching wines and food with similar flavors so they enhance each other. For example, you might pair sweet wines with desserts or a silky, heavier white wine with creamy pasta. Conversely, complementary pairings have opposite characteristics that balance each other. A great example of this type of pairing is an off-dry wine with spicy foods. The slight sweetness of the wine can cool the dish’s heat.

While these are two common pairing methods, remember that there are no steadfast rules. You can experiment with your favorite wines and meals and find pairings that delight you.

Wine and Food Pairing Examples

The next time you visit Tampa Bay, plan a stop at LALA St. Pete for a unique dining experience. We serve elevated American cuisine with a French and Mediterranean twist and have a wide selection of wines to pair with your meal. If you book one of our private karaoke rooms, you can also EAT, DRINK & SING your way through an indulgent wine-pairing experience.

Not sure what pairs well with wine? Here are some delicious examples:

1. Mushroom Risotto and Pinot Noir

Creamy mushroom risotto with wild mushrooms tastes earthy and delicious. To enhance the earthy flavor profile, consider drinking a glass of medium-body red wine like pinot noir. Its earthy undertones will complement the mushrooms in the dish, while the acidity can cut through the richness and creaminess of the risotto, making it feel less heavy.

2. Caesar Salad and Sauvignon Blanc

The classic Caesar salad consists of a simple mix of lettuce, parmesan, croutons and Caesar dressing. The sauce and cheese provide a creamy, tangy flavor. A crisp, dry white wine like sauvignon blanc is a fantastic choice for this type of salad. The wine’s acidity cuts through the cream and fat to make the meal feel lighter and fresher.

3. Baby Back Ribs and Cabernet Sauvignon

If you’re craving a rack of ribs, try tender baby back pork ribs smothered in tangy BBQ sauce. A full-body red wine like cabernet sauvignon is delicious with this meal. Pork ribs and BBQ sauces are incredibly flavorful, so you need a wine that can match the flavor intensity. Cabernet sauvignon is also high in tannins, which can help cleanse the palate of fattiness for a more enjoyable mouth feel.

Tune In, Turn Up — A Guide to Karaoke Etiquette

Karaoke is all about letting your hair down and being spontaneous with friends — but it comes with unspoken karaoke rules to ensure the fun continues for the whole night.

Knowing the basics will keep things friendly and running smoothly, whether you are a seasoned performer or a newbie. From respecting others’ turns to choosing crowd-pleasing songs, this guide will teach you the do’s and don’ts for enjoying the spotlight and preserving the positive vibes.

Know Your Venue

A crucial part of karaoke is familiarizing yourself with the scene. If you are attending an open event, understanding your audience will help you pick a song everyone enjoys.

Being familiar with the venue will also give you an idea of the house rules, including the dress code and how the performance order works. You can prepare by learning about song selection limits, simplifying the sign-up process.

LALA Tip: Support the venue by ordering drinks or food and tipping the staff appropriately. It shows your appreciation for the space they provide and can build a positive relationship with employees.

Song Selection

Your song choice can make or break your performance, which might be why many singers choose 1980s classics. Here are some simple steps for selecting music you and the audience will enjoy.

  • Pick a song: Choose a song you know and love. Keep it to a reasonable length — no 10-minute ballads to give everyone on the sign-up list a chance to share their talents.
  • Stay on key: Ensure the song suits your voice by picking a range you can handle.
  • Tempo: Check that you can easily keep up with the song’s speed. Fast-paced songs can be a fun challenge, but you might need to rehearse before getting on stage unless you already have it down pat.
  • Stay appropriate: Avoid offensive themes and language. Keep it simple.
  • No cliches: Opt for something well-known but not overdone to stand out.

LALA Tip: If you need a confidence boost, practice to improve your karaoke skills ahead of time.

Performance

Good etiquette can make your performance enjoyable for everyone. Whether you brave it alone or go on stage in a group, remember that everyone deserves an equal chance to sing.

  • Sharing is caring: Get back in line if you want another turn after singing your chosen song.
  • Volume control: Use your stage voice, but do not scream into the mic. It can damage the equipment.
  • Wait your turn: Respect the rotation, and don’t try to cut in line. Trust the DJ to call you when it is your turn to take the stage.
  • Engage: Make eye contact and smile to engage with the audience. Show them you are enjoying yourself, as enthusiasm can be infectious.
  • Clear the stage: If you are not performing, stay off the stage and let other performances have their time in the spotlight.
  • Keep it smooth: Pay attention to the lyrics on the screen to keep your performance smooth and avoid awkward pauses.

LALA Tip: Avoid mic drops. Microphones are expensive and need careful handling — dropping one might break it.

Audience Participation

Karaoke is all about having fun and supporting each other. Be a cheerleader for anyone getting on stage, even if they are more than slightly off-key. Encouragement goes a long way for nervous performers and pros alike. If you are waiting your turn to perform, speak quietly to avoid overpowering or drawing attention away from the person singing. Be considerate to everyone in the room to keep the energy positive.

Standing in front of the monitor when somebody else is singing can ruin their karaoke experience, especially if they do not know all the words to their song.

LALA Tip: Use on-stage gestures to invite the audience to sing along if you pick a crowd-pleasing song with a well-known chorus. The resulting confidence boost will make your performance more memorable.

Post-Performance

Whether you nailed your performance note for note or made the most of a vocal challenge, embrace the applause after your song ends. Take a moment, soak it in, and give your audience a little bow or wave to show your appreciation. Avoid hogging the stage by singing another song right away — let others have their chance first.

Return the microphone to its stand, hand it over to the DJ, or give it to the next performer as a simple courtesy. When you leave the stage, encourage the next performer to do their best.

If your friends tease you a bit when you return to your table, take it in stride as part of the karaoke experience. Also, remember that some guests go for the entertainment more than the singing, so never force anyone to get on stage unless they honestly want to. At most, offer to do a duet with one of your companions who may be too shy to strike out on their own.

LALA Tip: As you leave the stage, remember to thank the DJ for running the show and playing the tunes.

Discover Exhilarating Downtown Destinations

Downtown Tampa is a bustling, developed cosmopolitan area wrapped around the banks of the Hillsborough River. It’s beautifully lit at night to illuminate the various attractions, parks, museums, waterfront hotels, public art installations and other activities that line the water’s edge. Nightlife in Tampa owes much of its shimmering reputation to this metropolitan mecca.

Downtown Tampa Hot Spots for Arts and Culture

Tampa’s nightlife isn’t limited to clubs and DJ sets. There are plenty of cultural attractions mixed in between the Tampa bars and clubs if you’re keen on a more relaxed experience:

  • Tampa Riverwalk: The 2.6-mile-long Tampa Riverwalk features stunning light displays, seasonal events and plenty of fascinating locations along the way, from the Heights Night Market at Armature Works to the vibrant Sparkman Wharf. Stop by one of the beer gardens, visit the yummy street food stalls and watch the water taxis meander up and down the Hillsborough River.
  • Tampa Theatre: Sit back, relax and take in a show at the Tampa Theatre. Its elaborate design showcases the elegant and illustrious architectural style of the 1920s when it was first built. From newly released movies to old-timey classics and live shows, the Tampa Theater is the throne of Florida entertainment.

Check Out Northern Tampa Hot Spots

Northeast and northwest Tampa have exciting and unique entertainment spots for night owls looking for fun, games and delicious after-dinner treats. Northwest Tampa is home to the Lowry Park Zoo, Raymond James Stadium and many excellent eateries. The eastern side boasts the natural beauty of Busch Gardens and the University of South Florida. With so many iconic destinations, it’s clear why northern Tampa’s nightlife thrives.

Fun and Games in Northern Tampa

Choosing where to go out in Tampa depends on your mood, and if it’s games you’re after, you’re in luck. You’ll find dazzling lights and excitement for both adults and families in northern Tampa:

  • Lowry Parcade: For a genius combination of craft beer on tap and retro arcade games, swing by Lowry Parcade on Waters Avenue. The venue is packed full of Skee-Ball, air hockey, bubble hockey, Pinball, Galaga, Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, X-Men and more. • Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino: The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is a 245,000-square-foot goldmine of adult entertainment. It’s one of the largest casinos in the United States, located just west of the Florida State Fairgrounds. From tabletop games like poker, blackjack and baccarat to slot machines, there’s a game for everyone at this popular nighttime Tampa hot spot.

  • Aubi & Ramsa: The quirky Aubi & Ramsa is a liquor-infused ice cream bar at the Hard Rock Hotel in East Lake-Orient Park. It’s a true hidden gem, serving frozen desserts made with various boozy crowd favorites. Try its indulgent Macallan 12-year Highland Truffle single-malt ice cream, or pick the Passion Fruit Margarita tequila sorbet for something a little fresher.
  • BULA KAVANANDA Kava Bar and Coffeehouse: For an alcohol-free evening on the town, head over to BULA KAVANANDA in Seminole Heights Historic District. BULA KAVANANDA is a relaxing meeting place that serves ZEAL Coffee, kava from Vanuatu, yerba mate, on-tap kombucha, cacao shots, premium teas and herbal tonic elixirs.

Southern Tampa envelops Hillsborough Bay and hosts several unique, memorable nightlife locations, including clubs, bars, restaurants and “Instagrammable” entertainment hot spots. For the best nightlife Tampa has to offer, visit bustling Hyde Park or head down the coast to Bayshore Beautiful and Palma Ceia.

Here are two spots to add to your must-visit list:

  • The Hyde Park Cafe: With thumping music, laser shows and a crowd of dedicated regulars, the Hyde Park Cafe is not your typical cafe. Instead, it’s a multifaceted venue with four different sections and atmospheres. Singing karaoke with a friend or loved one is excellent fun, builds lasting memories and creates a special bond that only music can provide. Whether you’re looking for a solo showstopper or planning to perform duets on karaoke, picking the perfect sing is key to wowing your audience and making the most of your unique skills and preferences. We’ve compiled a list of 21 timeless hits catering to singers across generations, so you’re bound to find good duet songs for karaoke nights of all kinds.

Best Karaoke Duets

Pick a legendary tune to get everyone in a grooving mood. These beloved melodies for two or more singers are sure to get the room cheering:

1. Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell — “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”

This 1967 smash hit is up-tempo and retro in all the right ways. Combining authentic R&B, soul and pop, this song is perfect for a fun duet with a friend or a heartfelt couples’ moment with pizzaz.

2. Queen — “Bohemian Rhapsody”

Although Queen’s 1975 genre-bending masterpiece technically has six parts, it can very easily be split into two for a crowd-pleasing duet. This song has an uncanny ability to electrify any audience.

3. Seal — “Kiss From A Rose”

Seal’s 1994 power ballad, while originally a solo tune, was made iconic as one of the best duets for karaoke by Deal Pelton and Jeff Winger on season three of Community.

4. Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey — “When You Believe”

DreamWorks introduced the world to “When You Believe” in their 1998 blockbuster, “The Prince of Egypt.” Emotional and vocally captivating, this song is a fantastic duet choice for two female powerhouses.

5. Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes — “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life”

The movie “Dirty Dancing” brought us this 1987 chart-topping gem, full of nostalgia and 80s synthesizer grooves. We dare your audience to resist singing along to that ultra-catchy chorus!

6. Cyndi Lauper — “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”

Are you a girl? Do you want to have fun? Perfect! Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 bubblegum pop sensation makes for great karaoke duets at girls’ nights and bachelorette parties despite its origins as a solo song.

7. Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande — “Rain On Me”

Female pop icons Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande released this massive dance-pop banger in 2020 to help us rise above challenges and celebrate our strength. Empower the room and your voices with this modern anthem.

Quintessential Couples Songs for Karaoke

If you and your special someone are looking for a couples-themed song full of romance and good vibes, pick one of these popular duets:

1. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John — “You’re The One That I Want”

Grease is a musical that’s permeated pop culture since the 70s. This upbeat, lively duet is one of those perfect couple karaoke songs about love that’s still jam-packed with fun and energy.

2. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper — “Shallow”

With over 1.5 billion views on YouTube, this heartwrenching folk-rock duet from 2018’s “A Star is Born” has a mesmerizing balance of emotion and musicality that captivates crowds worldwide.

3. Elton John and Kiki Dee — “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”

This dainty 1976 throwback is easy to sing, lovely to listen to and charmingly retro — perfect for a lighthearted duet between sweethearts enjoying a well-deserved date night.

4. Lady Antebellum — “Need You Now”

For something more heartfelt and moving, Lady Antebellum’s 2009 love song brought country music into the mainstream pop scene with its beautiful melody and interplay of male and female vocals.

5. Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers — “Islands in the Stream”

This 1983 soft rock duet has a steady beat and sultry lyrics. Queen of country pop, Dolly Parton, peppers this duet with gorgeous harmonies, which you’re always free to omit for a simpler version.

6. Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown — “No Air”

Millennial couples will undoubtedly remember this R&B/pop duet from Jordin Sparks’ debut album. The good duo song has become somewhat of a symbol of young love in the late 2000s and graced many an iPod shuffle in its day.

7. Kristen Bell and Santino Fontana — “Love Is An Open Door”

Fans of Disney’s “Frozen” will adore singing this cutesy, family-friendly duet. It’s also a brilliant way of proposing to your Frozen-loving partner mid-karaoke session, as many viral videos on YouTube can attest to!

Easy Karaoke Duet Songs for Newbies

Plenty of duets let you and your partner have fun and sing along without intricate harmonies or ornate vocal runs. A few easy duet songs for karaoke beginners are:

1. Gotye and Kimbra — “Somebody That I Used To Know”

If you had ears during the 2010s, you probably know the chorus to this pop smash hit off-by-heart. It’s a simple, mid-tempo melody that fresh faces on the karaoke scene can easily sing.

2. Sonny and Cher — “I Got You Babe”

“I Got You Babe” is a familiar favorite with adorable lyrics and endearing simplicity. It’s a refreshingly wholesome symbol of 1960s counterculture, perfect for karaoke newcomers of all generations.

3. Brad Kane and Lea Salonga — “A Whole New World”

Disney movies are a treasure trove of couples songs for karaoke, and 1992’s Aladdin is one of the best. Its slower tempo and catchy tune will appeal to newer singers and more experienced belters alike.

4. Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel — “What I’ve Been Looking For”

We couldn’t make a list of best duets for karaoke without adding a dash of High School Musical. Become Sharpay and Ryan Evans in this fabulous, iconic 2006 song with easy harmonies and a short runtime.

5. Aqua — “Barbie Girl”

Cheeky and fun, Aqua’s 1996 Eurodance bop “Barbie Girl” is tongue-in-cheek lyrically and novice-friendly in its turn-taking duet style. This is a great song to get the crowd going on a fun night of drinks with friends.

6. The Mamas and the Papas — “California Dreamin’”

The recent social media buzz over 1965’s “California Dreamin’” reminds us that brilliant songs are timeless. It’s great for newbies because it has a short runtime and can be easily split into two parts (“mamas” vs. “papas”) while still sounding impressive.

7. Evanescence — “Bring Me To Life”

This one’s for the couple with one songbird and one good sport willing to yell a few lines into the mic to make their partner happy. Evanescence’s 2003 nu-metal/alt-pop fusion has gained a cult following over the years, and for good reason.

The post From Shower to Stage: How to Cure Stage Fright appeared first on LALA Karaoke.

Belting out a killer chorus from the comfort of your shower often seems much easier than performing for an audience on karaoke night. If you get anxious or nervous before going on stage, you may have a case of stage fright.

Overcoming stage fright can be your ticket to a fun experience with friends and family, and it offers a nice confidence boost. Singing can actually be a stress reliever, so once you get into it, you might find that karaoke helps you feel less anxious overall.

Whether you’re singing in front of a large audience or a small room of friends, tackling karaoke stage fright opens up many opportunities for a good time. Address your fears with these tips on how to get rid of stage fright when singing.

10 Ways to Overcome a Fear of Singing in Public

Karaoke stage fright can take many forms. You might experience more physical symptoms, like jitters and tension, or you might notice unhelpful thoughts, such as feelings of self-doubt or a fear of messing up. Think about your biggest problems, and explore different strategies for soothing them. Here are a few places to start.

1. Do Some Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises are a tried-and-true method for reducing stress and steadying your nerves. An easy one to do at the venue is box breathing, also called four-square breathing. Simply exhale, hold, inhale and hold, performing each step for four seconds.

Box breathing is just one option, but you have other breathing exercise options for reducing stage fright.

2. Redirect Your Thoughts

If you find yourself preoccupied with thoughts about the audience or your performance, make a focused effort to change them. Try thinking about the song itself rather than the audience. Listen to the chords, pick out the instruments, and pay attention to the lyrics.

You can also try focusing on your environment. Before you hit the stage, try to describe your surroundings in detail with phrases like, “The lights on the wall are purple, and this leather chair is smooth.”

Remember what you want from karaoke — to have fun and connect with people. Let that thought resonate, and don’t pressure yourself too much. Try to think of your performance as a goal rather than a chore.

3. Try Performing for a Smaller Audience

Singing in front of an audience of strangers is a bit like diving into the deep end. If karaoke stage fright feels overwhelming, try doing it with a smaller group. You can throw a karaoke party in a private room with some trusted friends or family members. Try your hand at karaoke surrounded by supportive people you know aren’t there to judge you.

4. Connect With Your Audience

On a similar note, try connecting with your audience. Get out of your own head by making eye contact with people and smiling. When people go to karaoke, they’re usually in a good mood and ready to sing along. People want to have a great time, and they’re eager to make you feel like a star. Look into the audience from time to time, and soak in the positive vibes.

5. Visualize a Positive Result

Visualization is a powerful technique that can help build confidence and give your mind time to “rehearse” your performance. Take some time to imagine yourself without stage freight. Imagine your facial expressions, the sound of your voice and your friends singing along.

By picturing yourself knocking your song out of the park, your body subtly goes through the motions and prepares to make it happen.

6. Fuel Your Body the Right Way

Performing well requires the right level of excitement. Too much, and you’ll be jittery and high-strung. Too little, and you won’t have the energy you need to put on a good show. If you have a fear of singing in public, try these dietary tips on karaoke night:

  • Avoid caffeine: Too much caffeine can ramp up anxiety, so keep it to a minimum.
  • Limit alcohol: Similarly, don’t go overboard on drinks. You might be tempted to pile on liquid courage, but too much alcohol can impair your performance. While you don’t need to sing beautifully, a difficult performance can lead to more anxiety the next time you do karaoke.
  • Chew gum: Try chewing some gum before you go on. It can help relax the muscles in your face and jaw and may reduce stress.
  • Stay hydrated: A dry mouth won’t do you any favors in karaoke. Make sure you drink plenty of water.

7. Find Your Song in Advance

A bustling party may not be the easiest place to make decisions if you fear singing in public. Instead, find your song beforehand. You can compare a few options and even practice, which can build confidence. Preparation may also help you remember the words, so you might not need to read the screen as much.

8. Loosen Up

Feeling stiff and tense? Shake it out, jump around or do some stretches. These little activities help you relax before you go on.

Try giving your mind a break, too, by making yourself smile or laugh. You might watch a funny video or have a friend tell you a joke. These strategies are a great way to lose the tension and drum up positive energy.

9. Sing With Someone Else

Solo singing can be daunting, especially if you’ve never done karaoke. Grabbing a friend to go on stage with you is a good way to ease the feeling of stage freight. You’ll have moral support and someone to lean on during the song. Plus, if you mess up the words, people are less likely to notice!

You can even go up with a large group. While helping you avoid the spotlight, group karaoke helps you bond with your friends, family members or co-workers.

10. Cut Yourself Some Slack

No one goes to karaoke expecting Grammy-worthy performances. Remember, it’s perfectly OK to make mistakes during your song. Anxiety often makes us dwell on our own mistakes, but if you pay attention during other songs, you’ll probably see plenty of people getting it wrong. However, you likely wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t been watching for them.

Remember that stage fright is very common. Many great performers like Sheryl Crow have struggled with stage fright — it’s understandable to get nervous before a performance. If you’re out with some supportive friends, consider mentioning it to them. They’ll probably be happy to help quell your nerves.

Be kind to yourself, and remember that the goal is to have a good time, not to win any awards.

While karaoke lets us showcase our talents and create memorable moments with friends, it offers so much more. From supporting the heart and lungs to reducing stress and blood pressure, there are so many amazing health advantages you can experience just by belting out your favorite tunes. So, bring your friends along, grab a microphone and look forward to the following benefits of karaoke:

1. Releases Endorphins

One of the most significant singing health benefits is its ability to release endorphins, the hormones responsible for making us happy. Scientists believe this happens as it promotes socializing and self-expression — both of which can factor into better well-being and reduced stress. Especially after a long day, singing can help release tension from the mind and body and create a sense of belonging. When you’re singing, you’re less focused on your troubles and more on the shared experiences and laughter in the moment.

2. Relieves Stress

Singing can reduce the stress hormone cortisol and help put us at ease. At the same time, singing along to your favorite song can slow your heart rate and allow you to breathe easier, which can help you relax. One study showed that singing in a choir greatly alleviates stress among members — showcasing the powerful effects of singing, especially when surrounded by others. The next time you have a difficult day, put on your favorite playlist and lose yourself in the music.

3. Supports Heart Health

Numerous studies reveal the benefits singing has on our heart health. One found that singing just a few songs can lower blood pressure, enhance blood circulation and improve cardio function. As we sing, we use our cardiorespiratory system to optimize breathing. More oxygenation means strengthened chest wall muscles, and improved body circulation and heart rate. With these effects lasting for hours, just imagine the benefits belting out two songs every day could have on our overall health!

If you or someone you know has high blood pressure, regular karaoke sessions are a great idea. Not only will you have fun and create lasting memories, but your heart will benefit too.

4. Stimulates the Brain

Singing karaoke can sharpen your concentration and problem-solving skills — revealing its impact on brain health. The activity involves following lyrics, rhythm and melody, which can help keep us focused and our minds sharp. As we sing, air flows to the brain to stimulate nerve activity and increase excitement, offering many physical, mental and emotional benefits. Studies have shown this level of activity might also boost cognitive function to counteract age-related decline in older adults.

5. Burns Calories

A lesser-known health benefit of singing is its ability to help us burn calories. While it might not be as much as running or hitting the gym, karaoke can help us burn a comparable amount of calories as walking, yoga or completing light house chores. It makes sense as we use many muscle groups to sing, including the diaphragm, back muscles and oblique. Our facial muscles also get a great workout from singing, making karaoke a natural, fun and easy workout.

6. Improves Speech

Speech therapy can help people who have experienced a stroke adapt and strengthen their speaking abilities. In fact, doctors have discovered that singing can be a great way to reactivate parts of the brain impacted by a stroke. Many speech therapists have begun experimenting with music and singing therapy — specifically karaoke therapy — using melodic intonation to help people with speech impediments. Singing is an especially valuable therapeutic tool because it is a universal form of musical expression as natural as speaking.

7. Builds Confidence

It takes considerable courage to stand up and sing in a room of people, but karaoke can help build up that confidence. As you sing, you can connect powerfully with the music, project your emotions and release tension in a creative form. Over time, karaoke becomes a way to shed your shyness and express yourself. The supportive environment is also beneficial, showing you that you can face a challenge and succeed.

There’s also a lot of joy to be found when learning a new skill. The more you practice, the more your voice will improve, encouraging you to continue and be proud of what you’ve accomplished. Whether you’ve been singing for a short while or for years, you can boost your self-esteem through karaoke.

8. Promotes Better Breathing

We use our entire bodies to sing, which can cause us to breathe better and with more ease. While inhaling and exhaling during karaoke, our diaphragm and lungs expand, causing our abdominal muscles to relax. Additionally, we tend to breathe much deeper when attempting those high notes, helping us exercise respiratory muscles.

In that sense, singing becomes a physical workout of the respiratory system. Numerous studies have found people with asthma, lung diseases and other chronic medical conditions can positively benefit from singing, showcasing its amazing impact on our respiratory health.

9. Improves Memory

Listening to and singing songs can reactivate areas in the brain associated with memory, reasoning, speech and reward. One study found that singing could positively impact the lives of people with dementia and their care partners. While karaoke offers the lyrics to you, you automatically access memories you have in your brain associated with that song. As mentioned, the learning and concentration parts of our brains are also affected by singing, both of which have a positive impact on memory.

10. Fosters Relationships

Singing karaoke fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie, which can also help strengthen your relationships in a community. In turn, you experience many health benefits of socializing — ranging from improved sleep to protection from chronic diseases. When you’re singing, you’re relaxed and in the moment. And when we’re with friends, there’s no need to feel shy or anxious. In that sense, karaoke becomes an act of bonding and self-expression for everyone involved. It can also be a great icebreaker when meeting new people!
